To really get that smooth, sleek hotel-quality feel, you'll want to invest in sheets from more luxurious brands. Brook + Wilde is one of the best around, combining premium materials with elegant minimalistic designs for some of the most premium sheets we've found.

Smashing it in the mattress department and now killing it once again with its sheets, Simba can do no wrong. Placing innovation at the heart of its products, these bed sheets are some of the best for temperature regulation, breathability, and all-around performance. Especially in the satin weave.

Linen sheets have a strange reputation for being less than comfortable, but Piglet in Bed has truly taken that and turned it on its head. Best for summer, these sheets are lightweight and breathable, encouraging airflow, but still keeping you warm on chilly nights.

Different types of bed sheets suit different people, so in order to make sure we found the best bed sheets on the market for every kind of sleeper, we broke down our findings into a few categories - the best cotton sheets, the best white sheets, the best sheets for winter, the best linen sheets and the best silk sheets. Each of these suits a different purpose, whether you're after something thicker and more warming, or are focusing on sleek, white sheets that look really elegant. In each category, we slept with many a style of sheet, perusing our all of our favourite bedding and furniture stores and comparing how each set of sheets stood up when tested for temperature regulation, comfort, thread count, construction and, of course, aesthetics. If you're after a good night's sleep, all of the below will help you get there.

While your sheets aren't going to be as visible as your duvet cover, there's something of a timeless nature about having a set of elegant white sheets, especially if you're after that hotel-style look. Whether you place them under a patterned or coloured duvet cover, or use them to enhance an all-white feel, they're a classic for good reason. It may be easy enough to spot a white sheet, but we've taken it upon ourselves to find the best you can buy, chosen for their comfort, breathability and design.

Designed with the same focus on innovation as Simba's technologically advanced mattresses, pillows and duvets, Simba's bed linen places temperature regulation at the forefront of the design. Available in two different options; a 200 thread count cotton percale sheet set or a satin-feel 400 thread count set, they're some of the best cooling sheets around, made from 100 per cent cotton. Mixing things up a bit, Panda's bedding is made from 100 per cent bamboo, creating a feel that's actually suitable for year-round use. Sustainably produced, the bamboo is organically grown with care taken to meet social and environmental standards, using less water than cotton would for an eco-friendly design. The real benefits for your sleep come from the fact it's antibacterial, while also being moisture-wicking and super soft to the touch. The best bamboo sheets? Easily. From 50. At mypandalife.com

Cotton is the material you'll see most commonly used in sheets due to its durability, breathability and just how comfortable it is to sleep on. Being made from a natural material, cotton keeps you cooler overnight by absorbing heat and also by keeping your bed dry when you sweat. Most cotton sheets are also easy to maintain as you can normally throw them in a washing machine and often a tumble dryer as well, and it's quite rare that they require ironing, unless you want them to look particularly crisp and wrinkle-free. And to top it all off, we all know from cotton shirts or T-shirts just how soft the material feels against the skin, making it a great option for a relaxed and comfortable night.

When shopping for cotton sheets you'll want to keep in mind the thread count and the type of cotton. We'd suggest looking out for Egyptian cotton if you want particularly soft feel sheets, and opting for at least a thread count of 200. A high thread count normally means the sheets will be softer, but do keep in mind that sometimes when the thread count gets too high it can make the sheets less breathable if they aren't made carefully enough.

Winning our award for the best range of colours on offer, John Lewis & Partners is always going to be our ever-reliable go-to department store for bedding. For mid-range sheets that tick all of our boxes and still manage to be affordable, it's an easy win. Made with Egyptian cotton and with a thread count of 200, it's a standard cotton sheet that still taps into some of the more luxuriously soft benefits of cotton. From 24. At johnlewis.com

Using white bedding is one of the oldest tricks on the block for making your bed look like a luxury hotel, and this one is as sleek as they come. Made from Percale cotton, with a thread count of 400, the sheets feel almost satin-like, despite actually being made from 100 per cent cotton. Pop a colourful throw on top, or keep it stripped back with a neutral or faux fur quilt. From 20. At heals.com

If you want sheets where it's instantly obvious they're made with high-quality cotton, Brook + Wilde has got you covered. Made from 100 per cent combed cotton that has been designed to have a cotton sateen finish, the Anmer collection has a thread count of 400 (in our opinion the optimal level) and comes with a simple white design which has a subtle border. When the results are this soft, they just had to make it into the guide. Even though this particular set doesn't incorporate a fitted or flat sheet, but comes with a duvet cover and pillowcase instead. From 180. At brookandwilde.com

Designed to be an affordable version of hotel quality sheets, Dusk captures that luxury feeling with its 400 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, while still keeping the price at a budget-friendly level. With a sateen finish, these have a classic white look and come with a range of different border colour options that allow you to add a bit of flair to your bedroom design. From 18. At dusk.com

If you've gone with a contemporary look in your home and want a sleek set of black sheets to continue it further, Dusk's is a very good option to get in your linen cupboard. Made from 100 per cent cotton percale, the set has a thread count of 200, meaning it feels soft and comfortable against the skin. And what's more, in classic Dusk style, the sheets are more affordable than most, while still being great quality. From 12.50. At dusk.com

You might be able to get away with using the same sheets all year round if you're lucky and have a nicely insulated house that also manages to stay cool in the summer, but if you live somewhere a bit draughty, taking advantage of sheets that trap in the heat and feel cosier to the touch, rather than cooler, is an easy switch to make with the seasons. Think brushed cotton bedding and flannel sheets.

If there was ever a reliable place to find bedding, it would have to be John Lewis. Affordable, and made with close attention to detail, these brushed cotton sheets are the stuff of a cold sleeper's dreams. Cosy and warm, retaining heat well and adding texture that feels soft and fuzzy, the sheets are an excellent winter investment. From 18. At johnlewis.com

Jack Wills probably isn't a name you've heard associated with bedding since everyone in high school had adorned their beds with the classic pink and navy Jack Wills branded duvet covers. But cast that image from your mind and let's start afresh with this checked bedding set. The kind of sheets you'd imagine finding in a log cabin, these are perfect for winter in both feel and design. The aesthetic is simply cosy, and what more could you want from a winter set of sheets? From 42. At jackwills.com

While linen has a reputation for being the best option for hot sleepers and for summer nights, it's actually well suited to year-round use. With naturally temperature-regulating properties, it's breathable in the summer, but keeps you warm on colder evenings too. Add this to the fact that linen has antibacterial properties, is moisture-wicking and has a unique texture that gives off a relaxed, nonchalant vibe, and we'd have to say it's one of our favourite materials for bedding.

Look no further for good quality, comfortable linen sheets than a brand that is entirely dedicated to linen. Living and breathing nothing but linen, The Linen Works' sheets are made from 100 per cent European linen, designed to be as soft and scratch-free as possible. The fitted sheets have a more substantial thickness than the flat ones, are suitable to be used every day, and even get more enjoyable to sleep on over time. From 85. At thelinenworks.co.uk

Using green shades in your bedroom can help create a more tranquil atmosphere, tapping into the relaxing feeling you get when being outside. Made with soft washed linen, the naturally crinkled look of Heal's forest green linen sheets gives off an effortless feel, while also being easier to care for than most sheets as they needn't be ironed. With enough weight to be warm in winter and enough breathabilty for summer, they're also a win if you're after something suitable for year-round use. From 15. At heals.com 041b061a72
