Janamdin Mubarak Allah Apko: The History and Culture of Celebrating Birthdays in Islam

Janamdin Mubarak Allah Apko: How to Celebrate Birthdays in Islam

Birthdays are special occasions that mark the anniversary of one's birth. They are often celebrated with joy, love, and gratitude. But how do Muslims celebrate birthdays? Is it allowed in Islam? What are the best ways to wish someone a happy birthday in Islam? In this article, we will try to answer these questions and more.

The Controversy over Celebrating Birthdays in Islam

There is no clear answer to whether Muslims celebrate birthdays or not. Some Muslims believe that birthdays are forbidden in Islam because they promote paganism and violate Islamic beliefs. They argue that birthdays are a form of imitating the non-Muslims who celebrate them without any religious basis. They also claim that birthdays are a sign of pride and arrogance, as they focus on one's self rather than Allah. They cite some hadiths that warn against imitating the Jews and Christians, such as:

"Whoever imitates a people is one of them." (Abu Dawud)

"You will follow the ways of those nations who were before you, span by span and cubit by cubit (i.e., inch by inch) so much so that even if they entered a hole of a mastigure (a kind of lizard), you would follow them." We said, "O Allah's Messenger! Do you mean the Jews and the Christians?" He said, "Whom else?" (Bukhari)

The Benefits of Celebrating Birthdays in Islam

Celebrating birthdays in Islam can have many benefits, if done in the right way. Some of these benefits are:

  • Celebrating birthdays can be a way of showing gratitude to Allah for giving us life and blessing us with His favors. Allah says in the Quran: "And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them." (Quran 14:34)

  • Celebrating birthdays can be a way of reflecting on one's life and evaluating one's deeds. Allah says in the Quran: "O you who have believed, fear Allah and let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do." (Quran 59:18)

  • Celebrating birthdays can be a way of making good intentions and resolutions for the future. Allah says in the Quran: "And those who say, 'Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.'" (Quran 25:74)

Therefore, celebrating birthdays can be a positive and beneficial practice, as long as it is done with the intention of pleasing Allah and not indulging in anything that may anger Him.

The Guidelines for Celebrating Birthdays in Islam

There are some guidelines that Muslims should follow when celebrating birthdays in Islam. These guidelines are based on the Quran and Sunnah, which are the primary sources of Islamic guidance. Some of these guidelines are:

  • Avoid anything that may involve shirk (associating partners with Allah), such as blowing candles, making wishes, or believing in superstitions. Allah says in the Quran: "And do not invoke besides Allah that which neither benefits you nor harms you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of the wrongdoers." (Quran 10:106)

  • Avoid anything that may involve haram (forbidden) activities, such as music, dancing, drinking alcohol, gambling, or mixing with the opposite gender. Allah says in the Quran: "And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty." (Quran 5:2)

  • Avoid anything that may involve extravagance or wastefulness, such as spending too much money, food, or gifts. Allah says in the Quran: "And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully. Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful." (Quran 17:26-27)

  • Avoid anything that may involve showing off or boasting, such as flaunting one's wealth, beauty, or achievements. Allah says in the Quran: "So as for he who transgressed and preferred the life of the world, then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge. But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination, then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge." (Quran 79:37-41)

  • Do something that may involve charity or kindness, such as giving sadaqah (voluntary charity), feeding the poor, or visiting the sick. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The best of people are those that bring most benefit to the rest of mankind." (Daraqutni)

  • Do something that may involve worship or remembrance, such as praying extra prayers, reciting Quran, or making dua (supplication). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if they are small." (Bukhari)

The Islamic Birthday Wishes and Quotes

One of the best ways to celebrate birthdays in Islam is to share some Islamic birthday wishes and quotes with your friends and loved ones. These wishes and quotes can convey your love, respect, and appreciation for them, as well as remind them of Allah's blessings and mercy. Here are some examples of Islamic birthday wishes and quotes that you can use:

  • "Janamdin mubarak allah apko. May Allah grant you a long life full of happiness, health, and faith. Ameen."

  • "Happy birthday to you. May Allah shower you with His grace and mercy on this special day and always. Ameen."

  • "On your birthday, I pray that Allah blesses you with wisdom, patience, and success. May He protect you from all evil and guide you to the straight path. Ameen."

  • "You are a wonderful gift from Allah to me and to the world. I thank Allah for giving me the opportunity to know you and to celebrate your birthday with you. May He reward you with the best of both worlds. Ameen."

  • "As you celebrate another year of life, I ask Allah to make it a year of growth, peace, and prosperity for you. May He increase you in knowledge, faith, and good deeds. Ameen."

You can also use some Quranic verses or hadiths as birthday wishes and quotes, such as:

  • "And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference." (Quran 17:70)

  • "And whoever is grateful, he is only grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful - then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous." (Quran 27:40)

  • "And say, 'My Lord, increase me in knowledge.'" (Quran 20:114)

  • "The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it." (Bukhari)

  • "The most beloved people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to the people." (Tabarani)

The Conclusion

In conclusion, celebrating birthdays in Islam is a matter of personal choice and preference. There is no clear evidence that prohibits or allows it in Islam. However, there are some benefits and guidelines that Muslims should consider when celebrating birthdays in Islam. Celebrating birthdays can be a way of showing gratitude to Allah, reflecting on one's life, and making good intentions for the future. However, celebrating birthdays should not involve anything that may contradict Islamic teachings, such as shirk, haram, extravagance, or showing off. Instead, celebrating birthdays should involve charity, kindness, worship, and remembrance. Moreover, celebrating birthdays should be accompanied by sharing some Islamic birthday wishes and quotes with friends and loved ones. These wishes and quotes can convey love, respect, and appreciation, as well as remind them of Allah's blessings and mercy.
