Shanichari faces many tragedies in her life: her mother-in-law dies; Ganju gets killed after consuming holy water from a temple; Budhua gets married to a local prostitute Mungri who becomes pregnant and then aborts the child; Budhua runs away from home never to be seen again; Lakshman dies of tuberculosis; Peewli returns only to die in front of her eyes; and finally Bhikni dies of snake bite.
Through all these events, Shanichari is unable to weep. She is called to be a rudaali for Ramavtar Singh's funeral. There she receives a letter from Budhua who has become a successful theatre actor in Calcutta. He writes that he has sent some money for her and asks her to come and live with him. He also reveals that Lakshman was his father and that he had found out from Peewli before she died.
This news shocks Shanichari and she finally breaks down and cries. She realizes that she has been living a lie all her life and that she has been betrayed by everyone she loved. She decides to leave the village and join Budhua in Calcutta.
